A lefthander will naturally hold their pencil in the left hand and the sharpener in the right, then twist the pencil anti-clockwise, the natural direction of the left hand.

Most pencil sharpeners are designed for right-handers so if you use them like this the blade will not do anything.

Left-handed pencil sharpeners have the blade position reversed so it sharpens a pencil turned anti-clockwise (and right-handers can't use them comfortably).
